Our final serving of the UAESBC Quarterly Talks in 2020 will feature our Founding President, Dr Brian Shegar. Details of the webinar are as follows:
Synopsis:
The talk is a distillation of a one-day workshop held for post graduate students at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). It will provide an introduction to the nomenclature surrounding the Middle East with a historical survey from the time of the ancient civilisations of Egypt and Mesopotamia to the modern period. The interesting ethnic and religious perspectives of the region will also be discussed. The GCC countries and their economic connectivity between Singapore will be covered. There will be a reference to the history of the Singapore Arab community and finally some of the current challenges facing the Middle East region. The objective is to provide a holistic understanding of the complexities of the Middle East which should facilitate business and other interests Singaporeans may harbour in this fascinating region.

About the Speaker
Dr Brian Shegar’s career covers leadership international banking experience with focus on South East and South Asia, Asia Pacific and Middle East. He successfully established and led the operations of Midland, NedBank and Emirates NBD in various locations in the Asia Pacific region including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. Dr Shegar’s involvement in the GCC began in 2006 when he established and ran Emirates NBD Group in Asia Pacific including the regional branch in Singapore and Rep Offices in China and Jakarta.
Upon retirement from Emirates NBD in 2018, Dr Shegar established ME-Asia Consultancy Pte Ltd and was elected President of the UAE Singapore Business Council. He is a Member of the Global Advisory Board of CASS Business School (covering UAE and Singapore) and the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Gulf Economics, Trade and Finance.
Dr Shegar holds a BSc Degree in Banking and International Finance and an MSc Finance from the CASS Business School of City, University of London. He was awarded a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Western Australia Business School. He has also presented papers and spoken at numerous seminars and conferences.
